Back to School (Eco Aware)

Hello there Undeclared Panache readers! I'm Elizabeth, creator of The Note Passer. It's time for back to school and Lauren has asked me to share some of my favorite ethical and sustainable school supplies with you!

Choosing sustainable supplies can be a fun and educational exercise for you and your children. Kids of any age can learn about caring for the earth, sustainability, recycling, and making informed decisions. Teaching "conscious consumerism" will encourage children to consider the impact of their purchases on the people, wildlife, and resources involved in the manufacturing process. And how cool will they be telling their new classmates that their notebook is made out of bananas and their math set made out of corn?!

To learn more about conscious consumerism, you and your child can check out:

In schools all over the country, kids are initiating activism and leading their schools in anti-waste efforts. If your child's school is not making efforts to be more sustainable, consider talking with the administration about possible changes. To learn how to help your school, go to:

Here are my favorites for this year and what makes them sustainable:

This ruler is made from 70% recycled plastic and packaged with 80% post-consumer waste.

This Banana™ Paper journal is made from a blend of post-consumer waste & agriculture waste: tree free paper, acid free paper, 100% post consumer waste, and banana plantation agricultural waste, all processed chlorine free.

Forest Choice pencils are FSC (Forest Stewardship Council)-certified, a warranty that the wood used is obtained from renewable and sustainable sources, contributing to the preservation of the environment.

Guided products are American made. These iPad cases super durable, easy to customize, and recyclable. The cardboard looks great blank, but kids love customizing them with markers or crayons for a personal touch.

The world's first FSC (Forest Stewardship Council)-certified pencil, ForestChoice #2 graphite pencils are made from FSC-certified Incense-cedar obtained from renewable and sustainable sources.

LunchSkins reusable sandwich and snack bags are certified food-safe, lead-free, BPA-free and phthalate-free. Each LunchSkin is made of quick-drying, lightweight cotton fabric, and hand sewn in the USA. LunchSkins are dishwasher-safe and an eco-friendly alternative to plastic baggies.

ecojot® creates eco-friendly stationery, paper goods, and custom products that feature whimsical and inspirational designs. Their love for paper, the planet, and art has enabled them to create a sustainable brand available in hundreds of locations around the world. All paper and board is made from 100% post-consumer waste and designed and printed in Canada.

This math set is made from corn plastic, a non-toxic and renewable source that is biodegradable and compostable. The packaging is 100% biodegradable and printed with soy-based ink on 100% post-consumer recycled paper.
This backpack is made with sustainable wood components, natural cotton, non-toxic dyes, insulated with a BPA free liner, and is PVC free. Instead of commonly used chemical-emitting PVC, Ecogear has created bags coated with EPO, a healthy alternative which creates virtually no risk to the environment or to human health.
